FRONT END PERFORMANCE CHECKLIST

Front-end Performance Checklist

Performance is a subject that is not always limited to the backend but is also influenced by frontend technologies also. It consists of a comprehensive list of elements that we should be aware of and should keep a check on as a frontend developer before applying to our project, both personally and professionally. Having an amazing front end can get you more traffic and influence the conversion rate, so make sure your plans meet the checklist given below:

DEVELOPMENT:

There are two types of developmental work done on the website and apps, namely back end and front end.

  • Back-end development involves the server-side or the coding part that the users generally do not perceive or are inaccessible by the user.It mainly focuses on servers, databases, customer information, APIs, and more.
  • Frontend development – This part involves the design and layout of the website or the application. It administers everything that the user first notices when they open their application or web-page. It builds the user interface of the web application and websites. Most often used languages to build the front-end of the websites and applications are CSS, HTML, and JavaScript, which permits the customers or users to access and interact with the site. The vision and knowledge about the website’s contents are also included in the front-end.It is basically what face of any online business or brand.

Why is front end performance check important: –

When a customer or a user visits your website or the app, they heavily rely on how interactive the app is or the layouts and visuals. They often see how fast the page is loading and how responsive the site generally is. When they ask for certain information, a site needs to give accurate information and load the page that the user demands.

Front end performance checklist: –

Frontend performance greatly matters for SEO (search engine optimization), accessibility, user interaction, and experience. Below are the keys:

1. Determine your KPIs (Key performance indicators):

Several tools and checkpoints are available to check the performance, but the best option currently available is the “Core Web Vitals”; Google announced these to check the user’s effectiveness of interaction with the user page.

Performance, responsiveness, and visual stability are the three important aspects of determining the KPIs of any website and app. The core web vitals, which are very important aspects that have been laid down by google in past years, are:

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) – It measures how much time the largest portion of the visible screen or page takes to load. It constitutes nearly one-fourth of the score.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) – It measures all the small and large jumps during the page loading in the page layout. The lower the cumulative layout shifts, the better. It constitutes about 15% of the performance check score. If this page returns a score of 0, it is good as the page layout did not change at all.
  • First Input Delay (FID) – It measures the user’s experience upon entering the first input on the page or the app. But still, this parameter is not used in scoring as the user interaction can be anonymous and cannot be accessed.

2. Time taken for first meaningful paint :

Time to first meaningful paint measures the time for the user to perceive the primary content and data of the page. It differs from a few other metrics you may have heard of.

3. Responsiveness and Visual stability :

These two are also the most important performance parameters as the responsiveness of the website is very important for user communication, and visual stability helps build the image of the page into the user’s mind.

Different tools to measure frontend performance: –

  • Chrome Devtools: Open Chrome dev tools, go to the Audits panel, and run a test with the performance checked. In the background, it uses Lighthouse and gives back a range of metrics, with the Core Web Vitals taking center stage.
  • GTMetrix:  GTMetrix is a very good performance analytics tool. It is built in a way that it can analyze and show the performance of your website and show better recommendations for improvement.
  •  Page speed Insights: As the most accessible tool out there, Page speed insights is web-based uses Lighthouse behind the scenes.

Thus, we can say that the front end is as important as the back end. It is the part that attracts the attention of the user and the customers to get you better conversion for your business. Also, various websites, including e-commerce websites, focus on the user interface the most to get enough traffic and sale. So front-end development is essential in conveying and delivering brands to the customers. To get this done at the best prices and new technologies, you need to surf across the internet to hire a skilled developer.
